Leadership takes many forms.  On a trip to study business, government, education and healthcare leadership in Tanzania, Africa, in July 2014, Dr. William Bengtson is shown here visiting a rural school for Masai children near Mt. Meru.

Tailoring your Leadership Program

Overview

Overview

Upon completion of your assessment, we will begin to work with you to build your program.  Together, we will design the leadership program that is right for you.  Once the program begins we'll continue to work with you to adjust your program as your needs change.  The sections below describe the general frameworks for each type of program, depending on your type of membership.

Getting Started:  Initial Member Consultation

Excellence in Leadership and Strategic Project Management

Individual Membership Programs

Once you have decided to become a member of the Minnesota Leadership Institute, we are ready to build your program.  The track you take will depend on the type of membership you have: corporate, international, non-profit, or individual.  In each case, the process begins with an assessment as further described in the corresponding sections below.

Our Approach

The International Leadership Program is a unique program designed to help leaders from around the world build their businesses or organizations in the United States.  The programs begin with an International Leadership Assessment, similar to the Corporate Leadership Assessment described in the Corporate Leadership Programs section, and are highly tailored to your specific business or organizational circumstances.

In general, these programs are designed to help your leaders identify markets and adapt to the business culture in the United States in order to increase the likelihood of success in doing business in the United States.

Corporate, International, Non-Profit, and individual

International Membership Programs

Non-profit organizations operate differently from for-profit businesses for many reasons.  Not least among them is that while fund raising and a healthy bottom-line are vital for the organization's success, service to constituents supersedes the need to achieve profits for shareholders.  From the board of directors to the people out in the field, the mantra of non-profits is different than a for-profit companies.

Because of these differences the structure of our Non-profit Leadership Programs, while having many similarities to the Corporate Leadership Programs, are modified in recognition of the cultural and organizational differences between the different types of entities.  The process begins with a Non-Profit Leadership Assessment and is followed by the development of a leadership program designed specifically to meet your organizations needs.

Overview

Non-Profit Membership Programs

Corporate membership programs are designed for any type of company that wants to improve the leadership capabilities of the within their organization.  The process begins with an assessment, described below.  A corporate member can select from one, two or all three of the models available, including Executive Leadership Program, Senior Leadership Program or Leadership Program, as further outlined below.

Tailored for Performance

Once the assessment is complete, we'll meet again to finalize the design of your program, bearing in mind that we can later adjust the design at any time.  The design will essentially be based on three components, including:

  1. Who will be involved in the program;
  2. What the content of the program will include; and,
  3. What the method of delivery will be.

Determining who will be involved will help us identify the program or programs best for you, including Executive Leadership Program for your highest level of executives, the Senior Leadership Program for middle-upper management and/or the Leadership Program for new, upcoming or first-level managers.

The content of your program will vary based on a wide-variety of leadership knowledge areas, which will be selected and adapted based on your needs and the results of the Corporate Leadership Assessment.

There are a variety of options for the method of delivery of your program.  Among these options include individual instruction, group facilitation, webinar presentation, readings, and retreats to name a few.

More information about the programs can be found by contacting the Minnesota Leadership Institute to set up a no-obligation initial consultation.

Building your Leadership Program

The process of becoming a member of the Minnesota Leadership Institute begins with an initial member consultation.  Of course, there are no fees or obligations associated with this consultation.  The goal is to help you feel comfortable that you understand what it means to be apart of the Minnesota Leadership Institute, what membership can do for you and your organization, and for you to walk away with more to think about.

During the initial member consultation we will also discuss the costs and time commitments of your program.  Programs are tailored to each member, so the costs and time commitments vary depending on your program objectives.

The consultation can be as short as a single phone call, or it can involve several meetings over a period of time, depending on your circumstances.  To get started, simply send us a note

A practical approach with the right expertise

Our overall approach is actually very simple. At the Minnesota Leadership Institute, we:

  1. Take the time to understand what our members need;
  2. Design leadership programs that fit those needs, linking leadership to organizational performance;
  3. Professionally deliver the programs;
  4. Continuously evaluate the results; and,
  5. Adjust the programs as appropriate.

While the steps are simple, to achieve them we bring:

  1. Extensive business leadership experience;
  2. Expertise in a broad set of organizational skills;
  3. A high-level of leadership academic experience; and,
  4. Expert-level rigor in skills development.

Our Individual Leadership Programs are second-to-none in helping you develop and refine your professional leadership skills.  An investment in our individual programs is an investment in your career and your growth as a human being.  You can expect your perspectives of the world to change, providing you with leadership skills to handle the most difficult situations with confidence.

We begin with an Individualized Leadership Assessment of your experience, capabilities and circumstances.  We then work with you to develop a leadership program that is specifically designed to meet your individual needs.  You will learn the appropriate leadership theories, but most importantly you will learn how to apply those theories to your specific situation.

Your program can include individual sessions, group sessions with other members, leadership situation simulations, allowing you not only to develop your leadership skills, but helping you build your professional network along the way.

As noted above, during the initial consultation process we will agree upon your objectives for your program.  This agreement will also guide the objectives for the Corporate Leadership Assessment to be completed for your organization.  While the Corporate Leadership Assessment allows the Minnesota Leadership Institute to better understand your organization for the purposes of designing programs that meet your needs, you can also benefit from the assessment by learning more about your organization.  We'll produce a full report following the assessment for your review.  The level of depth of the assessment will vary based upon your needs, but in general the scope of the assessment will include:

  • Corporate strategy
  • Corporate culture
  • Organizational alignment
  • Process alignment
  • Tools and technology
